CAT 416 transmission disengaging
| MM | Have Caterpillar 416 backhoe, not sure of year, SN: 5PC09287. Transmission works fine for two or three minutes then appears to disengage, no forward or reverse. All other hydraulics work fine. Turn tractor off and let sit a minute, restart, and everything works fine for another two or three minutes. Transmission fluid level OK, replaced external spin-on transmission filter. Any suggestions as to what else I need to look at? Thanks, Mark |

| noob416 | MM..you happen to have about the same model as me, maybe little older..(Mine is SN 5pc12xxx, 1990 model) Any chance you could post/email a picture of the rack rod and bracket on the bucket actuator that I'm missing so I can get an idea of what I might could fabricate and /or buy surplus? |
| mark | I have/had the same issue with my 416. Unfortunately, the screen is gettin clogged with metal shavings from the tranny - I assume. Any thoughts from anyone would be appreciated. Now looking for a reman. Thanks - Mark (not the original) |

| William Hakim | I lent my backhoe 5pc07935(1990)to a neighbor and got the problem. Neighbor must have revved the engine and hit the connect button and wiped out the forward/reverse clutches. I have about 4600 original hours. The hint that the clutches are beginning to wear is that if you have the machine up in the rear or front and rear you will notice the tires moving as if in gear. Debris will fill the screen but at this point the transmission needs repair. I took mine out and delivered to the local cat dealer and $3,600 later received the trans back. Installed rebuilt trans and went to fill with oil and the trans leaked like sieve. Cat came out and worked five hours on site and the trans leaked worse by 8 hours the Cat cert. mechanic sealed the trans. He filled it and we started and idled for 10 minutes and then put it in gear. Trans destroyed itself. Upon removing transmission we discovered that the torque converter must have ballooned up during idle and so enlarged about a 1/4 inch that the converter hit the charge pump bolt head and the rest was history. Totally disgust with Cat dealer who retook the transmission and totally disassembled the trans and returned it to me in a crate in pieces. You likely need to rebuild your trans..mine still sits from 2 years ago. I am found a competent rebuilder of these specific transmissions but have not had the money to ship and repair. |
| Tim Padgett | My Cat 416 backhoe 5pc05308 has similar issue. When raised up and digging rear wheels would turn. Machine won't move at all forward or reverse now. Screen has small shards of disk like debris. How difficult to pull transmission out. Any recommendations on who to rebuild besides Cat dealership or where to find reman trans. William Hakim who was your 'competent rebuilder'? Thanks |
